Tatung InfoComm Launched WiMAX in Kaohsiung : Preparing for World Games 2009

After 3 months operated the first WiMAX service in Penghu Island, Taiwan, Tatung InfoComm expanded its WiMAX coverage to Kaoshiung City on July 8. Digitimes reported that Tatung InfoComm to secure up to 12,000 WiMAX clients in Kaohsiung City by the end of this year. In addition Tatung InfoComm plans to invest an additional NT$10 billion (US$303 million) for the build-up of
its WiMAX networks in the next five years, according to company chairperson Lin Kuo Wen-yen, who presided over an opening ceremony for the inauguration of WiMAX services in the southern port city of Kaohsiung.

Also Tatung InfoComm plans to start offering notebooks or netbooks with built-in WiMAX modules in the fourth quarter of 2009, while beginning to market WiMAX-enabled handsets and mobile Internet devices (MIDs) in 2010, said Lin Kuo, who noted that the WiMAX notebooks and netbooks will be supplied by Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) and other vendors.

Acer Taiwan general manager Scott Lin, who also attended the opening ceremony, revealed that Acer has rolled out three models of notebooks with built-in WiMAX modules, and the company is ready to ship those WiMAX-enable notebooks to Tatung and other carriers.

Kaohsiung is a city located in southwestern Taiwan. It is enclosed by Kaohsiung County, and faces the Taiwan Strait on the west. Kaohsiung, officially named Kaohsiung City.

Kaohsiung will host the World Games of 2009 on July 16 to 26, a multisport event primarily composed of sports not featured in the Olympic Games.

According to ChinaPost, a citywide WiMAX mobile service platform offering multi-channel wireless Internet access, a mobile navigation system and a “mobile eye” security system, will be launched in Kaohsiung City for World Games participants.

The platform will later be transformed into a facility dubbed “City Guarding Angels Service” that will be available for disadvantaged citizens and also used for other city affairs, the city’s Bureau of Transportation.

Recently the sole telecommunications sponsor at The Kaohsiung World Games 2009 Chunghwa Telecom announced that the they will donate each athlete and official a mobile phone card (Ideal Card) with phone number and NT$ 200 communications charge.When NT$ 200 communications charge is used up, users can buy “Ideal Recharge Voucher” at the shopping districts or hotels

Together with Chunghwa Telecom, the Transportation Bureau will provide 1,000 bilingual PDAs that will be distributed to some of the volunteer workers, referees, judges and athletes. Users will be able to download a variety of applications providing updates and information for the games, food and shopping areas.

The “mobile eye” consists of a video recording device that can be used to film any attempts to break the law or violate public order, with the information recorded automatically and relayed to a central security facility in real time.

The NT$600 million (US$18.2 million) WiMAX platform was completed in May this year after two years of preparation and will start providing services July 16, the opening day of the games, according to the Kaohsiung Organizing Committee.

The WiMAX service is being introduced in collaboration with the Executive Yuan’s M-Taiwan Program, which aims to establish a mobile Internet access environment and take Taiwan’s penetration rate for wireless Internet from world’s 20th to fifth position.

Apparently Tatung InfoComm will provide WiMAX service to support World Games 2009 in Kaohsiung.Hot spots for receiving WiMAX include Kaohsiung International Airport, Jhongshan Rd., Bo-ai Rd. and alongside the banks of the Love River, as well as at the World Games venues.

There is no information what kind of bilingual PDAs that will distributed to some of the volunteer workers, referees, judges and athletes. Whether it will be WiMAX-enabled PDA or only ordinary WiFi-enabled PDA.

If bilingual PDA will be WiMAX device and definitely it will manufactured by Taiwan WiMAX Company.

Could it be D0 WiMAX MID from DMedia ? Or WiMAX Smartphone powered by Android that Tatung InfoComm has been developing (rumor) ?

WiMAX has become the main theme of COMPUTEX TAIPEI since 2008. The theme of the event in 2009 is WiMAX on the Move. It presents three features, Innovation, Leap, and Launch.

All the latest innovative WiMAX products such as WiMAX-embedded Notebooks and Netbooks, the smallest and lightest WiMAX MIDs, the unique WiMAX TV dongle, and other WiMAX-related products are in WiMAX Taipei 2009.

Thus it is divided into four areas, which are the WiMAX Applications Area, the WiMAX Components, the WiMAX System Products Area, and the WiMAX Testing Area.

2009 is the year Taiwan’s operators launch commercial WiMAX services. These include VMAX, Vee Telecom, TATUNG InfoComm, and Global Mobile, and they will be demonstrating their diverse WiMAX application services to the public for the first time.TATUNG InfoComm is the first commercial WiMAX provider that operate in Penghu Island.

Taiwan has developed a complete WiMAX ecosystem, chipset, CPE, network elements,system integration,applications and commercial operations.

In addition, this year Intel showcased the amazing connectivity of different mobile devices. Two Mobile Travelers holding MIDs will roam around TWTC Hall 1, and transmit real-time video via webcam to Intel’s booths both in Hall 1 and the Nangang Exhibition Hall. Highlights from Intel include WiMAX-embedded Notebooks and Netbooks. All these devices come with built-in Intel WiMAX/WiFi Link 5050 series modules that can let you have unprecedented Internet surfing through WiMAX.

Many WiMAX devices were displayed for example ECS U170/171 WiMAX/GSM USB Dongle Phone and Accton Wireless Broadband (AWB) RG230-2.5 Multi-user Indoor WiMAX CPE.

Motorola USBw25100 made in China, exactly by Taiwan OEM/ODM Company named Quanta Microsystems, Inc. Apparently CLEAR USB Modem, aerea USB Dongle, Tatung USB Dongle were developed by the same company.Quanta Microsystems is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Quanta Computer Inc which known as One Laptop per Child (OLPC) maker.Quanta Microsystem Inc manufactured of USB Dongle for Motorola and Alcatel Lucent.

Mediatek GSM+WiMAX dual-mode mobile phone prototype which presumably powered by Mediatek M7118 System-on-Chip for the most cost effective WiMAX+GSM device.

The M0 is a WiMAX-enabled MID by Dmedia. It’s presumably the commercial stage of Dmedia G400 that expected coming early 2009.The OS is Windows CE 6.0 R2. Powered by Samsung-made ARM architecture CPU (533 ~ 800MHz) with large display 4.3 inches (800 × 480).

The IDV-230G/ 250G/ 350G series of 802.16e Wave2 VoIP Gateways is manufacturer by Gemtek which is one of the largest providers of WiMAX CPE and base stations in Taiwan with exports to all over the world.Gemtek also provided WiMAX CPE products for Green Packet.

Comsys Communication & Signal Processing Ltd is a manufaturer of mobile WiMAX/cellular dual module chipsets that provide both broadband wireless access via WiMAX and cellular phone connection.The ComMAX™ CM1125 is Multimode Mobile WiMAX/GSM/EDGE baseband processor which developed by Comsys Mobile to provide users with the ultimate mobile internet experience.

The U120 by MSI is a netbook PC that is WiMAX enabled. Due to a greater efficiency of the next generation WiMAX modules, even netbooks can now enjoy the wireless mobility provided by WiMAX technology.

Intel displayed Fujitsu Lifebook P8020 which already announced in the beginning of 2009. It will support WiMAX connectivity courtesy of Clearwire.

Tatung InfoComm Launches Taiwan’s First Commercial WiMAX Network

Tatung InfoComm officially launches Taiwan’s first commercial WiMAX network in Penghu Island on April 27.

Yan Xin, General Manager of Tatung Telecom says, WiMAX network completion construction projects of 21 base stations and coverage of up to 80% in Penghu Island.

The company is offering several specials to entice Penghu’s 93,000 citizens to sign up for the new high speed wireless Internet access service.

Anyone who signs up for unlimited monthly WiMAX service that includes both a WiMAX card for their laptop PC as well as a WiMAX modem for their home between now and June 30 will pay NT$1,680 (US$50) per month.

People who just want a WiMAX data card for their laptop can sign up for NT$699 per month unlimited service, and people who want WiMAX at home can opt for an NT$649 per month plan. The minimum price for monthly service will be NT$1000 per month after the special introductory rates expire.

Tatung Developing Android-based Smartphone,Presumably WiMAX ?

Taiwan-based IT company Tatung presumably follow what ECS did when developing WiMAX phone.
ECS already had ECS S370 WiMAX Smartphone and ECS U71 eMAX, handphone with WiMAX modem capability.

According to company chairman WS Lin, Tatung are experimenting with Android for new devices although the company has yet to finalize its product roadmap; these could well be sold through their affiliate Tatung InfoComm, who hold one of Taiwan’s six WiMAX licenses.

Tatung InfoComm plan to launch a WiMAX service on the Penghu islands on the next 27 April. At current free trial period, Tatung InfoComm provide Accton Wireless Broadband AWB US 210 as WiMAX USB Modem.

Tatung InfoComm Provide Mobile WiMAX Free Trial in Taiwan

Recently we featured Tatung InfoCommm is officially going commercializing WiMAX in Penghu Islands on April 27th, 2009.

The latest information we got from Taiwanese blogger Antgoto (macroview.tw) that he had opportunity to test WiMAX free trial from Tatung InfoComm.

In beginning of April he received an USB WiMAX modem, but it wasn’t Quanta USB Dongle 2.5 GHz that we expected. At this time Tatung InfoComm provide AWB US210 from Accton Wireless Broadband Corp.

The AWB US210 has antenna and USB plug can be folded for storage easily.It supports Windows XP and Vista. .Available in three band 2.3-2.4 GHz (US210-2.3),2.496-2.696 (US210-2.5),3.3-3.6GHz (US210-3.5)

Tatung provide WiMAX connection manager software.It will display IP address, signal strength, download and upload speed.

Antgoto reported the average download speed was almost 2MBps and upload at 197Kbps. Although the trial periode’s speed was considered to be fairly fast but the connection was not stable.

Tatung InfoComm will provide Mobile WiMAX free Trial in Taiwan until September.Hopefully Tatung InfoComm will improve the WiMAX network stability soon.

Tatung InfoComm to Start WiMAX Services in Penghu Islands,Taiwan on April 27

Tatung InfoComm (www.tatung.net.tw) , a wholly owned subsidiary of a Taiwanese conglomerate, Tatung Co.(www.tatung.com),which was responsible for the “M-Taiwan Project” of Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs (IDB, MOEA).
M-Taiwan Projects is a national project of Taiwan to establish a networked information society across the island.Tatung’s great achievements on the M-Taiwan Project of Hualien, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung Counties won Tatung a high recognition from IDB.

No wonder in July 2007 Tatung InfoComm acquired the WiMAX license (2595-2625MHz frequency band) for the southern region of Taiwan.

On June 2,2008 Tatung InfoComm has selected Alcatel-Lucent to deploy a commercial WiMAX 802.16e-2005 (Rev-e) network in Penghu Islands,Taiwan.

In October 2008 Tatung InfoComm announced a plans to purchase about 200 WiMAX base stations and related network equipment from Alcatel-Lucent.The purchase of 200 WiMAX base stations is part of a new NT$500 million (US$15.4 million) procurement plan to purchase equipment needed for Tatung’s WiMAX networks in Kaohsiung city and Penghu islands.

Tatung InfoCommm became the first WiMAX operator who acquired operation permitted license of WiMAX in Taiwan on November 19th, 2008.

Furthermore, Tatung InfoCommm is officially going commercializing in Penghu Islands on April 27th, 2009, according to the company.

The Penghu islands are an archipelago off the western coast of Taiwan in the Taiwan Strait consisting of 90 small islands and islets covering an area of 141 square kilometers. The whole archipelago forms Penghu County, Taiwan Province, Republic of China.

The Penghu islands consists of near one hundred islands. The land area totals about 127 square kilometers. The Makung Island (including Makung City and Hushi) is the largest island in the archipelago, followed by Hsiyu, Baisha.

The initial WiMAX deployment focuses on reducing the digital divide, with WiMAX providing most of the wireless broadband data and voice services across 70% of the county’s territory. The availability of broadband services is also expected to help boost the local tourist trade in the county, known for its natural scenery and rich cultural background.

Customer premise equipment (CPE) will comprise of USB dongles and wireless access points (AP) during the initial period of operation, company president Peter Yen said.

Apparently USB dongle that Peter Yen said will be Quanta USB Dongle 2.5 GHz which provided by Quanta Microsystems, Inc. (QMI) (www.qmitw.com), an ODM company from Taiwan. QMI is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Quanta Computer Inc which known as One Laptop per Child (OLPC) maker.

Update : At this time Tatung InfoComm doesn’t provide Quanta USB Dongle 2.5 GHz but Accton Wireless Broadband (AWB) US210-2.5.

QMI was the one of four companies that received the Alcatel-Lucent Seal of Interoperability Acceptance for Commercial Services (SIACS) for completing the highest level of interoperability testing.

Devices qualified for the Alcatel-Lucent SIACS includes Quanta USB Dongle (2.3GHz, 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz) and Quanta PCMCIA card (2.5 & 3.5GHz)

Quanta USB Dongle 3.5 GHz also available as Alcatel-Lucent USB WiMAX dongle for Aerea WiMAX in Amsterdam, Netherland.

Motorola seems indeed to be working with the same ODM as Alcatel-Lucent. Motorola USBw25100 is available as Clear’s USB WiMAX modem. Motorola USBw25100 apparently is Quanta USB Dongle 2.5 GHz.

For the wireless access points (AP) that Peter Yen said apparently will be Accton Wireless Broadband (AWB) RG230-2.5 Multi-user Indoor CPE (2.5GHz).

Accton Wireless Broadband (www.awbnetworks.com) was another Taiwan’s based ODM company that received the Alcatel-Lucent Seal of Interoperability Acceptance for Commercial Services for completing the highest level of interoperability testing.

The AWB RG230 is a WiMAX indoor IAD. It integrates Wi-Fi(IEEE 802.11b/g), VoIP and Ethernet technology and provides internet connectivity through WiMAX. Compliant with IEEE 802.16e WiMAX standard, the AWB RG230 delivers the last mile broadband wireless access (BWA) for service provider in fixed or mobile applications. It performs as an alternative to wired DSL or cable modems with higher and wider transmitting speed and coverage.

AWB RG230 are available in three types :

RG230-2.3 for 2.3-2.4 GHz frequency band
RG230-2.5 for 2.496-2.696 GHz frequency band
RG230-3.5 for 3.3-3.6 GHz frequency band

Apparently Tatung InfoComm will be the first WiMAX provider who start commercial services and takes the telecommunication industry of Taiwan into the next generation.
