Indonesia’s Local WiMAX Industry Prefer 802.16e
Apparently the 2.3 GHz WiMAX 802.16d auction winner in Indonesia aren’t able to provide WiMAX in Q4 this year.
From eight winners only Telkom, Indosat M2, Firstmedia who already pay upfront fee. After receive letter of warning from government recently Berca Hardayaperkasa pay upfront fee with additional late charge.
Even though government decided to deploy of WiMAX 802.16d in Indonesia but many Indonesia’s local WiMAX industry prefer 802.16e mobile WiMAX.The reason why government take this decision because they want to support local WiMAX industry who has at least 40% of local content on WiMAX component or device.

In order to accelerate WiMAX deployment in Indonesia, recently the local WiMAX industry, operators, and WiMAX association signed the Memorandum of Local WIMAX Industry Readiness to support the deployment of mobile WiMAX 802.16e in Indonesia . Event held by Indonesia Telematics Society (MASTEL), Chamber of Commerce, Intel, id-WiBB and WiMAX Forum Chapter Indonesia.
The local industry who sign the memorandum were PT.Panggung Electric Citrabuana, Olex Cables Indonesia, Gema Teknologi Indonesia, Berca Cakra Teknologi, Xirka Darma Persada, Realta Chakradarma, Jetcoms Netindo, and LEN. Additional Apkomindo and Aspiluki from asociation.
Sylvia Sumarlin, CEO of Xirka Darma Persada and Chairman of WiMAX Forum Chapter Indonesia says “Selling 802.16d WiMAX chipset, I confess it’s not saleable and industry prefer 16e WiMAX technology.”
According to Sylvia, 802.16e WiMAX technology provides a cheaper price compared to the 802.16d WiMAX technology.
Way back in May, Basuki Yusuf Iskandar,Director General of Postel said “Just two more years we will held the auction for 802.16e mobile WiMAX.”
