Samsung’s Simplest Migration to Mobile WiMAX Release 2

In June WiMAXian featured what Intel has been doing for IEEE 802.16m,the next generation of  Mobile WiMAX technology.
Recently WiMAX Forum and executives from premier suppliers and operators were on hand during ITU Telecom World 2009,in Geneva, Switzerland,to express their commitment to build and trial WiMAX Release 2 based on the IEEE 802.16m standard. Ecosystem participants represented Alvarion, Beceem, Cisco, Clearwire, Huawei, Intel, KT, Samsung, UQC, Yota and ZTE. Also revealed was a milestone of 500 network deployments in more than 145 countries – placing WiMAX as the leading mobile broadband technology.

IEEE 802.16m is the most probable candidates for IMT-Advanced technologies (advanced IMT-2000)  generation by ITU.The developing 802.16m standard offers new capabilities and efficiencies to meet the challenging IMT-Advanced requirements.

The IEEE’s IMT-Advanced proposal documents that, according to the ITU-R’s rigorous definition reflecting aggregate throughput delivered to multiple users in a practical deployment, using 4X2 MIMO in the urban microcell scenario with only a single 20 MHz TDD channel available system wide, the 802.16m system can support both 120 Mbit/s downlink and 60 Mbit/s uplink per site simultaneously.

This is breakthrough performance. Higher data rates can be obtained with additional spectrum resources or more complex antenna schemes. The WiMAX Release 2 profile will also incorporate these capabilities for improved VoIP capacity, spectral efficiency, latency, handover speed, cell range, and coverage, with support for wider operating bandwidth in both TDD and FDD duplexing.

The WiMAX Forum expects to see WiMAX Release 2 available commercially in the 2011-2012 timeframe.

“As is evidenced here today, there is a broad ecosystem ready to deliver WiMAX as the first IMT-Advanced compliant technology to market,” said Ron Resnick, president of the WiMAX Forum.“One of our top priorities is to bring WiMAX Forum Certified Release 2 networks and devices to market by the end of 2011. Even better, with double digit WiMAX deployment growth every month, the next release of WiMAX will have an even more substantial installed base upon which to build.”

In addition Samsung recently introduced its vision and commitment for Mobile WiMAX Release 2 based on IEEE 802.16m at ITU Telecom World 2009.

Samsung boast Mobile WiMAX Release 2 will four times faster data speed than the current Mobile WiMAX Release 1 based on IEEE 802.16e technology.

Samsung’s Mobile WiMAX solution provides strong backward compatibility with Mobile WiMAX Release 1  solutions. It allows current Mobile WiMAX operators to migrate their Release 1 solutions to Release 2 with little expense by upgrading channel cards and their basestation software.Also, the subscribers who use currently available Mobile WiMAX devices can communicate with new Mobile WiMAX Release 2 systems without difficulty.

Samsung’s solution comprises its U-RAS Flexible basestation (a separated type of ‘Digital unit’ and ‘Radio unit’) with upgraded modules, the existing Mobile WiMAX handset, and the prototype of the new handset developed for Mobile WiMAX Release 2.

The Samsung RAS (Radio Access Station) is capable of supporting up to 6 sectors. Air interface capacity per sector is as follows.

  • Average Throughput

29:18 : =14.5Mbps (DL) and =5.8Mbps (UL)
32:15 / 31:16 : =15.7Mbps (DL) and =4.6Mbps (UL)

  • Peak Throughput

29:18 : =37.4Mbps (DL) and =10.08Mbps (UL)
32:15 / 31:16 : =40.28Mbps (DL) and =8.06Mbps (UL)

The DU (Digital Unit ) of U-RAS Flexible can support both Mobile WiMAX 802.16e to 802.16m modem cards in transition periode while migrating to full Mobile WiMAX Release 2 based on IEEE 802.16m.

Samsung plans to provide the first trial solutions of Mobile WiMAX Release 2  for Yota in Russia, Clearwire in the United States and UQ Communications in Japan by late 2010, and work closely with other major operators.

“Many of our clients, for example, watch movies using the 4G Internet. However, currently, to watch the HD movie you have to download it first. With WiMAX 802.16m, one will be able to watch the the HD-quality movie on the big screen online. And this is just one of the applications of the new technology,” says Dennis Sverdlov, Yota CEO. “Even more, the capacity of new basestations is many times more than that of the current ones. This will allow us to provide services to more clients using the same number of basestations.”

Yota expects Mobile WiMAX Release 2 to offer higher performance than the competing 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard.

Samsung also announced to deploy more than 8,000 Mobile WiMAX base stations for Yota, WiMAX inRussia. Samsung will provide additional 1,400 Mobile WiMAX macro base stations and high capacity (28 Gbps) ASN Gateway to Yota by early 2010.

Moreover, Yota expects that the increase in subscribers will accelerate with its launch of VoIP service and a broad range of Mobile WiMAX devices. Yota is planning to launch the world’s first VoIP service with its new Dual Mode handset supporting Mobile WiMAX and GSM dual band in November.

Yota is also preparing more than 100 types of Mobile WiMAX devices including USB dongles, phones, notebooks, netbooks, express cards, and CPEs by the end of this year.

“We are committed to expand the Mobile WiMAX network in 180 cities in Russia by 2012,” said Mr. Dennis Sverdlov, CEO of Yota. “Thanks to Samsung’s strong support, we have been able to deploy the Mobile WiMAX network across the broadest regions in the fastest period.”
