Last week WiMAXian featured ITRI’s android-based WiMAX PID. We will see more Android-based WiMAX device in the future.

In February,Computer World had interwiew with Scot Lane, director of marketing and sales for Sprint’s 4G unit.Scott Lane shared information that Sprint Nextel Corp. expects to launch a new smartphone that works over high-speed wireless WiMAX, CDMA cellular and possibly Wi-Fi in early 2010.

The WiMAX phone also “could be based on Android” partly because Sprint has a “close relationship with Google,” the main proponent of Android, Lane noted.

At 4G World Conference, Sprint executives recently told PC World that the new smartphone will be dualband-it will contain both a 4G/WiMAX radio and a 3G radio. Todd Rowley, VP of Sprint’s 4G business unit, told PC World Sprint is currently in talks with a handset maker for the phone, but couldn’t reveal details.

Rowley also says Sprint won’t begin selling the 4G smartphone until the Clearwire WiMAX network reaches around 100 million people in the U.S. That’s likely to happen in late 2010; Clearwire is saying it’ll reach 120 million people by the end of 2010.

In Dec 2008, there was a news that Samsung Electronics in the development process of its new Google phone to release out in the second quarter of 2009 via Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile USA in North America.  As Sprint speed up the process for the launch of Google phone, which predicted to select a full touch screen phone for a form factor of its Google phone, the one that it adapted to Omnia and Instinct.

Samsung has experience in Samsung SWD-M100 Mondi WiMAX MID which recently won an award for “Best WiMAX Device” at 4G World conference and also provided Samsung SCH-M830 WCDMA/WiMAX smartphone, named “WiBro Phone”,smaller screen size than Mondi,with an ‘Omnia’ user interface based on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional.

Actualy the Samsung SWD-M100 Mondi and Samsung SCH-M830 and were spotted at MWC 2009.We featured them both with hands on video.

Sprint and Samsung are both members of the Open Handset Alliance, which promotes Google’s Android mobile OS. Sprint will host an open developer conference (featuring Android) in Silicon Valley in October.

In August Phandroid shared Samsung InstinctQ (M900) pictures, the second android phone from Samsung apparently for Sprint. You can see Sprint’s logo on the top of the screen.

The “Q” stands for QWERTY as the InstinctQ will be the first of this brand to sport a full slideout keyboard in addition to the traditional Samsung Instinct which already sell by Sprint from April and Samsung Instinct S30.
