Modacom URoad-5000, The Portable WiMAX/WiFi Router for Shinsei Corp
In March UQ WiMAX announced the availability of WiMAX/WiFi gateway for using at home or office though it wasn’t a portable WiMAX modem with built-in battery.
At INTEROP TOKYO 2009, Shinsei Corp showcased URoad-5000, the portable WiMAX/WiFi router with built-in lithium-ion battery. Just like CLEAR Spot, with CLEAR USB WiMAX modem, the URoad-5000 should combined with MW-U2510 USB WiMAX modem.

The URoad-5000 is smaller and lighter than CLEAR Spot. Here’s the comparison :
Dimension :
CLEAR Spot : 125mm x 75 mm x 15mm and 170g
URoad-5000 : 105mm × 60mm × 13.3mm and 110g
Battery Usage :
CLEAR Spot : Just over 2 hours and 15 minutes (stay online)
URoad-5000 : About 3 hours (stay online)

Shinsei Corp colaborated with Modacom, a WiMAX Korea company, to develop and manufacture this portable WiMAX/WiFi router.
The detachable USB WiMAX modem, the MW-U2510 presumably was develop with reference design from Modacom MW-2500, the USB modem for WiBro, WiMAX provider in Korea.
The MW-2510 apparently is the Japanese version of MW-2500 with similar product design.
Fortunately Modacom MW-2510 provided WiMAX Connection Utility software for Mac. No wonder because Modacom has KWD-U2000 as the first Mac friendly USB WiMAX modem.
You can download the WiMAX Connection Utility software for Mac (DMG) and installation manual (PDF)
In Korea, Modacom Interbro has provided “the Egg”, a portable WiMAX/WiFi router for WiBro. The Egg doesn’t need attached to any USB WiMAX modem to share internet connection.
The URoad-5000 look nicer compare to CLEAR Spot. Black glossy with LED indicator more attractive than black doff CLEAR Spot. It’s smaller and live longer battery also.
CLEAR should consider URoad-5000 and not only depend on Cradlepoint PHS300 for portable WiMAX/WiFi router which can create personal hotspot instantly.
