Japan’s NTT DOCOMO Launched BeeTV to Prepare Mobile Video Demand on 4G Network
Last month WiMAXian featured what happen on the race between WiMAX and LTE in Asia Pacific.
Recently FinancialTimes reported that Japan’s NTT DOCOMO will launch its next-generation 4G mobile phone network in 2010 – even if its rivals around the world wait , its president has told them.
In May Japan’s largest carrier,NTT DOCOMO launched a service called BeeTV and signed up 400,000 paying customers in the first seven weeks. With monthly charge of 315 yen ($3) including tax.
NTT DOCOMO joint with Avex Entertainment Inc. for the production and on-demand distribution of video content packaged for the mobile phone environment. This service previously scheduled to begin operating in March 2009.
DOCOMO provide its IT infrastructure, advanced mobile technologies and vast experience in providing mobile customers with popular video content. AEI contribute its expertise in the fields of content creation, artist management and services centered on intellectual property.
Unlike most mobile-content, BeeTV’s content developed specifically for the small screens of mobile phones, giving special consideration to scripting, editing, photography, etc. tailored for the mobile phone environment.
Today BeeTV provided over FOMA (Freedom Of Mobile Multimedia Access), the NTT DOCOMO’s third-generation mobile communication service based on W-CDMA technology. It was launched as the world’s first 3G commercial service in October 2001. In the future BeeTV will provided over LTE as NTT DOCOMO plan to launch its next-generation 4G mobile phone network in 2010
Mobile video will be a major reason mobile operators will roll out 4G networks based on Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology, according to NTT DOCOMO president Ryuji Yamada.
With a theoretical downlink speed limit of 100 Mbps, LTE could open the door for a host of new mobile video services like streaming high-definition mobile video. Mr. Yamada said that said the LTE networks could make it easier for subscribers to buy videos on the go, as well as spur interest in unlimited mobile data plans.
Mr Yamada said LTE was a central part of DOCOMO’s plans for growth in average revenue per user and profits in Japan, where almost everyone owns a mobile phone.
“Through LTE, we want to be known as ‘Douga no DOCOMO’,” said Mr Yamada, a slogan that translates as “Movie DOCOMO”.
NTT DOCOMO is the second major carrier to lay out aggressive LTE deployment plans, as Verizon Wireless said it would begin rolling out its 4G network by the end of the year. Verizon plans to have LTE networks rolled out to 25 to 30 markets by the end of 2010, and it is hoping to have nationwide deployment by 2015.
Actually Yota WiMAX in Russia provide Yota Video Demo, an online viewing of full-length and animation films, musical clips and short video. And also Yota TV, an online viewing of more than 20 Russian and foreign channels.
All this offer comes in Yota Max, a fast unlimited mobile Internet service plan applies only to only to HTC MAX 4G. With monthly charge of 500 Rub ($15.5) including Yota Music.
Apparently NTT DOCOMO’s BeeTV ($3/mo) is cheaper than Yota ($15.5/mo) DOCOMO hopes Mobile Video Demand is increasing and it can deliver economically via LTE.
Could UQ WiMAX provide Mobile Video service through WiMAX in Japan also ?
