Mac OS X Driver Available for aerea USB Dongle : Is It Possible for CLEAR USB Modem ?

Recently aerea announced that Mac users can also be online with aerea WiMAX network in Amsterdam. All you need is aerea USB dongle, Mac OS X driver, username and password. First time users only need 3 minutes to install the product and you are ready to go. The installation process is a onetime event.

Aerea is now available for pc’s and laptops with Intel and Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7., Windows XP and Vista. Aerea will be available for Apple Intel Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 and Apple Intel Mac OSX Snow Leopard, later this year.

Actually aerea USB dongle ( Alcatel-Lucent 9799 MIMO USB Dongle 3.5GHz ) and CLEAR USB WIMAX modem ( Motorola USBw100 ) were develop with the same OEM/ODM company named Quanta Microsystem Inc.

Many WiMAXian visitor asked about the availability of Mac OS X/Linux driver for CLEAR USB WiMAX modem. Therefore WiMAXian try to contact Clearwire and recently got info from one of Clearwire’s Manager and here’s what he said:
“Mac OS X and/or linux functionality for the USB (CLEAR USB WIMAX modem) should come within 3 months or so (is what I’ve been told) I hear they are in the testing phase.”

Is 3 months too long for you ?
So why don’t you try to install the Mac OS X driver from aerea. But it gonna be your decision and WiMAXian don’t responsible for that :-)
Hopefully aerea’s Mac OS X driver is possible also for CLEAR USB WiMAX modem.

Please share the result with us.

Great. I am a little sick carry Clear Spot every where I go.
  • I am a reseller of Clear WiMAX in Atlanta and I can tell you that a hybrid 3G/4G WiMAX device with Mac support is due in August.

Not having Mac support right now with the USB modem is a big problem for me.

    Hello,

Today I tried using this modem in Portland with clear.

I am running Mac OS 10.5.7 on a Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz Santa Rosa (June 2007) laptop.

    It did not work.

The modem is recognized by the application but does not acquire a signal after 10 minutes of scanning for one.

Also, the network manager fails to recognize this as a wimax port. It is seen as a USB(en) port. And it fails to see it plugged in by telling the user that "the cable is disconnected", even when plugged and recognized by the Alcatel connection software.

The way that 'clear' manages authentication is different from the software and this is a key problem because clear customers do not login with usernames/ passwords for internet access.

    Hopefully they fix it soon.

Huge oversight on clear's part. I've seen more Macs in Portland than PCs.
  • Hi Arturo,
Thanks for sharing.I agree with you, CLEAR should provide the Mac OS X driver soon because there is more Mac users in the Portland-Atlanta-Vegas than Amsterdam (aerea).

Yes, I'm in ATL and just signed up for CLEAR (2 packages for home and laptop). The fact that I own a MacBook Pro didn't even cross my mind and wasn't a concern until I read Engadget. This is disappointing but I'm sure someone will conjure up a workaround within the next week or so.
