BanglaLion to Start WiMAX Service in Bangladesh from 1st June

Recently we featured WiMAX deployment in Philipines by Globe Telecom & Huawei. Later on people in Dhaka Bangladesh will discover WiMAX soon.

BanglaLion Communication LTD, BRAC BD Mail Network Ltd and Augere Wireless Broadband Bangladesh Ltd — won the licences from Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to operate Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) services nationwide using WiMAX technology in 18 November 2008.

The license was obtained through an open bid process at a cost of about 31 million USD. BanglaLion was the highest bidder in obtaining the access frequency in 2.5 GHz band. The license allows using WiMAX standard 802.16e and onward revisions only. It allows VoIP services as well.

BanglaLion said it would be ready to launch WiMAX services in Dhaka by June. Apparently they will be the first company to provide WiMAX service in Bangladesh.

Along with its rollout plan, BanglaLion disclosed its tariff plan at a seminar on ‘WiMAX for Digital Bangladesh’ held at the Bangladesh China Friendship Conference Centre, on the sidelines of the BCS Digital Expo-2009.

The company said customers can get minimum 128Mbps round the clock by connecting BanglaLion’s WiMAX modem, which costs only Tk3,000 (USD 43.45). The monthly connection fee would be Tk600 (USD 8.69).

But we check at BanglaLion official website (www.banglalion.com.bd), they offer only one speed connection 128 kbps (kilo bit per second) from 1st June,2009. It’s equal to 16 kBps (kilo byte per second).

BanglaLion will offer several tariff plans at 128 kbps speed :

Home User/Individual for Tk 600/Month (USD 8.69)
Corporate (5-10 users) for Tk 550/Month (USD7.97)
Corporate (10 users above) for Tk 500/Month(USD 7.24)
Day User (Max3GB) for Tk 45/Day (USD 0.65)
Night Package (12 AM to 9 AM =9 hrs) for Tk 300/Month (USD 4.35)

Many internet user disapointed because BanglaLion said on the advertisement on Daily Ittefaq that the minimum speed would be 128 kbps. It’s too slow compare to WiMAX full capability.

Hopefully BanglaLion will provide WiMAX speed at 128Mbps not 128kbps.Just what they said at seminar.

this is asad from dhaka.This is very important to mention that Internet should be measure base on speed without any hassle interaction mean collation free. In that part I don’t know why the all ISP provider avoid it and try to focus based on capacity mean kbps/KBPS /MBPS. Instated of that it should be not kHz (in about global position) it should be minimum 2 KHz and sequentially increasing ....

I think it's just cheating with nontechnical people in bangladesh. Here lots of people don't know well about internet. 16kbps horrible for wimax. Where gp or local isp connection is much more than wimax. How wimax offer video conference and voice call and shouted high high speed internet. I think it's nothing but cheating with all of us.

whenever any company designs a product there are several cost items to consider. For wimax broadband, there are elements like infrastructure cost, bandwidth cost, sales and marketing cost, customer service cost, equipment costs, taxes etc.

From Bangladesh perspective, bandwidth price is now 18,000 taka per mega bit per second (mbps). This is announced by BTRC recently. Every internet provider (ISPs, Cellphone Operators and Wimax-operators) have to take prior approval from BTRC regarding price of the product. Also, there is some guideline and flloor- and-ceiling of price for services.

Therefore blame BTRC and not the providers for their illogical pricing and concepts.

But I personally hope, the situation will improve much by next 2 years!

I am using now 128 kbs speed and it is only 500/- in dhanmondi - 15.

like everybody else i was blissful about new arrival of wimax.at the very outset,i knew wimax would have the speed measured in Mbps for live video streaming from the source of news paper.but later on by logging to bangla lions website i was a bit worried n confused to see the provisioned speed in 128 kbps instead of 128 Mbps.i thought whether i was wrong or their typing mistake.but i was correct after seeing so many comments from our online friends.now best thing will be for bangla lion is to sort out this confusion.is it 128Mbps or 128Kbps?they have to make us understand about what they spoke on seminar is correct or wrong.rudely, true or false?coz we people r not muddle headed twits to be convinced easily spending lots of grans.to my all friends,is it possible to have smooth live video conferrence in this slow kbps speed.take care.

It is really somewhat disappointing that the speed, as stated, is only 128 kbps (this is a vague term; the discernible one is 16 KBPS). We hoped that it would bring us at least high speed internet. Currently as a grameenphone user, I'm enjoying upto 70 KBPS speed during the off-peak hours, whereas average speed is 10-20 KBPS. So what's the benefit using Wimax? I think Banglalion should reconsider this point.

I think top Laval of government who are involved in this sector should be informed about it. Because they tried to introduce new technology for country's development but plunderer of this country take advantages of their ignorance . bracNet already started distributing Wimax secretly 1Mbps monthly cost about 30,000 tk. This rate and service is only for broad band service providers .And When a service provider will get it ,soon they will divide it in to several parts when a client will get 16 to 20 kilo bytes per second and cost around 300 to 400 providers will take 600 to 1000 from you include other costs,same as a normal broad band service provider always use to do.Now question is If everything remains same as previous days than Why government introduce Wimex ?Is it for providing high speed interne to develop IT sector or make people fool? The process of distributing wimax by 3 licensed company is clearly indicating that in next 10 years Internet user of this country will not get so call "high speed " connection.Because this syndicate is preparing to make quick money targeting ignorant students,illiterate computer users.So be careful and inform your friends and relatives about wimax cheating. Remember if people of this country become conscious only then we can build digital Bangladesh.

If Bangla lion provide only 128 kbps (kilo bit per second) then it is not necessary to use wimax because grameen and citycell both are providing 128 kilo bit or 16 kbps.I think another group of fraud people came to plunder our money in the name of wimex.It is totally cheating if you use the term "High speed".I think we all Internet user should inform inocent people of our country , who are really going to be the victim of these cheater.

As I said earlier logically it is possible to get as max as 72 Mbps, But practically one user can get download speed upto 10 Mbps, depending on how wimax provider plan their channel size and also what type of device you will use to connect them.

128Mbps ? it is not possible as WiMAX standard doesn't support this? Standard says 72 Mbps Max over a base station. But still that is for 20 MHz Channel Size. I dont believe they can manage 20 MHz channel size per Base. So expect 20/30 Mbps per base. As a user you can't get more than that even if they provide you full bandeidth of that base. 128 kbps is not bad for a home user in any ways. Don't you think?
