ECS U170 eMAX, The World’s First 2in1-WiMAX USB Modem and Mobile Phone
Last month we featured ECS EliteGroup’s ECS S370 Personal Internet Communicator, integrates the Comsys Mobile ComMAX CM1125 single-chip multimode mobile WiMAX/GSM-EDGE baseband processor.
Collaboration between ECS and Comsys are going onward to a new stage by developing ECS U170 eMAX.
The ECS U170 eMAX is especially designed for the connected youth/student sector, providing a low-cost, compact device that functions both as a WiMAX USB modem dongle and a mobile phone. The device can be connected to any notebook/laptop computer to provide WiMAX functionality for internet/data service, or detached from the computer to function as a mobile phone for voice and SMS service.
“Although WiMAX operators are currently focused on data applications, they do understand the need for voice,” added Ehud Reshef, WiMAX Product Marketing Director of Comsys Mobile. “ECS EliteGroup’s vision in developing the U170 will provide an enormous boost for the WiMAX operators’ business case by helping to open up new consumer markets for WiMAX.
“The introduction of this new concept in mobile connectivity is expected to drive WiMAX adoption in developed markets,” commented Rex Chang, Vice President of ECS EliteGroup Computer Systems.
The ECS U170 eMax is expected to be commercially available early in May 2009, and ECS will be supplying the device to several WiMAX operators in Taiwan as well as promoting it to WiMAX operators elsewhere in Asia, USA and emerging markets.
The ECS U170 eMAX will be displayed at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, 16 – 19 February 2009, at Comsys Mobile’s booth #2B73 (Hall B) and at ECS EliteGroup’s booth #2G37.
I think ECS U170 is the world’s first 2in1-WiMAX USB modem and mobile Phone. We don’t know yet which WiMAX provider would utilize it for the upcoming WiMAX gear.Probably XOHM in Baltimore because they are (Sprint) GSM provider also.
