WiMAX in Malaysia : The End of 2008 Status

Yesterday we featured Indonesia to deploy WiMAX nationwide in 2009. In Southeast Region both Indonesia and Malaysia develop on 2.3 GHz wireless broadband access spectrum. Apparently Malaysia has one step ahead beyond Indonesia in WiMAX deployment. Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has awarded four provider to roll out a nationwide WiMAX network in Peninsular Malaysia.

Recently Malaysian Wireless has reported update status of WiMAX deployment in Malaysia.They explained what these four WiMAX provider has done so far.

Packet One (P1) started to provide commercial WiMAX on August 19,2008. P1 has limited WiMAX coverage in the Klang Valley and Johor Bahru, however it managed to rollout the service in more areas as compared to the other WiMAX operators.


Recently P1 held online-voting to hear which city should P1 offer WiMAX service. They expect to get the right place by popularity. At this time Petaling Jaya,SS2 is on the top of the list.

P1 plan to launch a USB WiMAX modem in Q1 next year followed by a WiMAX Mobile Internet Device and a PDA.

With its aggressive roll out, P1 is so far the best performer among all the other WiMAX operators out there

AsiaSpace’s amax was also launched in August 2008.They offer package of 1 year contract period and 3 months advance fee to be collected upon registration. They provide package USB Modem+broadband, Multi-user modem+broadband, Enterprise/SOHO Multi-User.


amax is the first WiMAX provider to launch a USB WiMAX modem.

amax promise that it’s network will cover the entire Klang Valley by end 2008. They boast that by the end of 2010, the entire nation will be one big amax hot spot.

Although the services is available and has some limited coverage in the Klang Valley, not many people out there who has heard of amax

In November, YTLE partnered with Cisco to establish its WiMAX core network in Peninsular Malaysia.They expected to have nationwide commercial service launch in 2009. They had experiment WiMAX in 2 hotels and a cafe in Bukit Bintang.

As for now, YTLE is the only company to not follow the 2008 WiMAX deadline by publicly announcing their full launch that will be in Q4 2009.

In August, REDtone has successfully launched its WiMAX service in Kota Kinabalu business district, offering high speed internet access for enterprises. It signed an agreement with Motorola Electronics Sdn Bhd as its technology partner.REDtone offer WiMAX packages for corporate and premium dedicated lines.

The company plans to offer the WiMAX service to the consumer in big way from late-2009 when 2.3Ghz WiMAX devices are widely available.

As an official comment from Malaysia Government regarding these WiMAX stage at the end of 2008, Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said :

“Generally, three (of the companies) have done a good job while one is slightly behind, If they can’t give a good reason why they can’t give the business plan as what they have proposed, we would like to take the licence and give to those people who are really interested and serious in that particular industry”
